AWAKEN, SLEEPING DUMMIES
Samantha Galarza (Puerto Rico)
"Awaken, Sleeping Dummies" is an experimental spoken word piece positioned from the experiences of a young queer woman of color living in the NY Metropolitan area. It is a critical social commentary on queer identity, fluidity, the limitations of binary framing, the U.S. prison industrial complex, white privilege, and the complacency that keeps people from connecting institutional systems of power to everyday oppression and violence.

Samantha Galarza is a storyteller with a dream that the story will one day change. A Sag-Aftra actress, singer, writer, art-ivist, and experimental performer, she strives to create and perform art that deconstructs colonial narratives --pieces that reflect her voice, her vision of unity and, at times, her "it's time to just blow shit up" rebellion. Her work explores queer identity, gender, substance abuse, urban youth politics, immigration, and policy that disproportionately affects people of color. She spends most of her time working as a professional screen actress and is currently writing an “urban story” screenplay about a young Latina negotiating complex family histories, all the while trying to raise her queer teenage sister by herself, "the right way." Bridging the gap to between mainstream media and progressive political art- that's what it's all about.

"Memories Like Kool Aid" is a performance piece that reflects on the artist's personal experiences growing up as a Queer kid in the suburbs of Chicago. The poetic narrative includes aspects of resistance and self control while evoking emotive and funny moments of what it is to be a Queer Latino.

Ricardo Gamboa (Mexico) is an academic, activist and artist who is dedicated to the social change potentials of art and art-making. In 2007, Gamboa became the founding Artistic Director of Teatro Americano, an ensemble theater creating work for Chicago’s Latino immigrant communities through direct community action. Gamboa’s play The Real Life Adventures of Jimmy de las Rosas received the Latino Playwrights ImPAACT Award and his first film, the short "The Southside Has Many Beauty Queens," won the Chicago Latino Film Festival’s Best Short Award. In 2010, Gamboa moved to NYC to expand his performance practice and filmmaking. Gamboa was an Associate Producer for film non-profit Scenarios USA and fellow of Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics EmergeNYC. He performs with the NY Neo-Futurists and queer underground’s Low Standards. He is currently receiving his M.A. in Arts Politics at New York University where he will pursue his Ph.D. in American Studies while continuing to produce performance and media work independently.

CINEMAROSA is a monthly, independent, film program created in 2004 by artist, Hector Canonge. CINEMAROSA’s mission is to promote, and present Queer independent films and videos by local, national, and international filmmakers. The monthly program encourages discussion forums among guests and participant filmmakers in order to create a cultural cinematic hub around LGBT issues and concerns. CINEMAROSA has been recognized as the leading independent LGBT film program in NYC featuring works that best reflect the diverse experiences and lives of LGBT peoples around the world. CINEMAROSA has co-produced events such as Queerin’ Queens, Rosalicious, Gayleria, E V A (School for Alternative Filmmaking) in Corona, Queens, and the monthly literary reading inQbator at Word Up: Community Bookstore in Washington Heights, Manhattan. In 2010, CINEMAROSA received a Proclamation by the City of New York, through the office of Jackson Heights Councilman Daniel Dromm. CINEMAROSA will celebrate its 9th ANNIVERSARY in 2013.

9th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Hosted at the QUEENS MUSEUM of ART
CINEMAROSA, the monthly film screening series of New York City, celebrates 9 years of service to the LGBT community with the special presentation of a program focusing on Queer Latin/o/a local and international artists whose works explore various issues in relation to LGBT experiences through film, poetry and performance. CINEMAROSA's 9th Anniversary Celebration program includes the presentation of the award winning feature film "Ausente" (Absent) directed by Argentine director, Marco Berger, the performance presentations of local artists Ricardo Gamboa (Mexico) and Samantha Galarza (Puerto Rico), plus the special presentation of "Besame Mucho" by CINEMAROSA's founder and director, Hector Canonge, as he prepares to embark on a Summer project taking CINEMAROSA to various countries in Latin America. Film Screeening: AUSENTE (Absent) Dir. Marco Berger (Argentina, 2011, 87 min) Enigmatic drama weaves a mysterious web of lust, guilt, repression, and voyeuristic taboos. A favorite of the festival circuit, and winner of various international awards, this feature film tells the story of a young man, Martin, who tries to find a whole series of excuses to subtly invade the privacy of his swimming instructor. When his intentions dawn on him, the teacher's integrity has already been compromised, and only an unexpected turn of events could help solve what might seem as an abuse of an adult by a minor. Marco Berger's original feature film uses the glances exchanged by his protagonists to tell the story. Martin's unwavering gaze is contradicted by his apologetic body language, which is nevertheless unable to conceal the fact that he wants to breach taboos and move into new territory. Sebastian's evasive, worried look, on the other hand, reflects the fact that he does not want to see the game that is being played with him. Berger teases expectations: is this going to be a gay romance, a social melodrama about an illicit relationship, a stalker thriller – or possibly all three? Berger creates an enigmatic, seductive atmosphere that keeps you on your toes. Performances:
